John, the elder, pleads for Christians to keep themselves from idols (1 John 5:21).  In this seminar we examine the particular idolatries that tempt preachers today, such as those of popularity, authority, novelty, oratory, entertainment, busyness and secularism as a means of constructing a more positive approach to biblical preaching.  The purpose is by no means to induce guilt, but rather to release preachers into their true calling as messengers of God and encourage the preaching of the living word.

Derek Tidball was Principal of the London School of Theology (formerly London Bible College) from 1995-2007 and was elected Chairman of the Council of the Evangelical Alliance from 2004-2008. He has served as pastor of two Baptist churches, was President of the Baptist Union from 1990-1991 and became a Vice-President of the Evangelical Alliance in 1995. For four years he was the Head of the Missions Department of the Baptist Union and he is currently Visiting Scholar at Spurgeon's College, London and involved in post-graduate supervision in a number of theological colleges.
